N.Y. Transportation Authority chooses wireless consortium for rail communications

Sep 27, 2007 4:00 PM, MRT

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) board approved an agreement with Transit Wireless, a consortium of technology vendors, to equip 277 underground New York City subway stations for cell-phone and wireless Internet service, in order to assist first responders and provide critical information during emergencies. The system can locate the source of a cell-phone transmission and relay the information to the appropriate 911 communications center, so police and paramedics can respond to the location. The consortium will be responsible for the installation costs and pay the MTA an estimated $46.8 million over a 10-year period.
