Sensor-laden ferries act as mobile research labs

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) biologists installed a package of sensors on the Katama ferry fleet that travels between Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Mass. The sensors measure water quality and photograph plankton on a year-round basis. The data are then sent wirelessly to WHOI’s shore-based lab for analysis and downloaded to its Web site.
