The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced that the IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN standard for Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks—the foundation of WiMAX and WiBro technologies—has been incorporated into International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2000 Recommendations maintained by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ITU is a United Nations agency for information and communication technologies. It recognized IEEE 802.16 by incorporating it as the sixth terrestrial radio interface for IMT-2000, or 3G, according to the IEEE.
