A proposed resolution that would establish a “911 Education Month” to encourage awareness of the 911 emergency-calling system was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives this week.

Introduced by Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), the bill has 16 co-sponsors, including Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), who joins Eshoo and the House co-chairs of the Congressional E-911 Caucus. Supporting organizations include the E-911 Institute, the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), the National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA), the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO), CTIA, 911 for Kids and COMCARE.

Although rules prohibit specifying a month in the resolution, officials associated with the cause have indicated that they want April designated as “911 Education Month.”
