Microsoft pursues CDMA

Microsoft Corp. has announced plans to unveil software that powers cell phones based on Code Division Multiple Access technology.
Until now, the company’s cell phone operating system worked with only one major cell phone standard, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), which is more popular in Europe.
According to a statement released by the software giant, “Microsoft’s investment in CDMA is in response to the technology’s growth both in the United States, where CDMA is the most widely deployed network, and abroad, where CDMA adoption has increased 31 percent since last year.”
Industry estimates suggest there are roughly 100 million CDMA phone users in the United States, compared with 17 million GSM subscribers.
