IBM gets nod for DC-area wireless public safety network

The Washington Post reported this morning that officials in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland would announce a contract today with IBM to build a $19 million wireless commmunications system to serve public safety agencies across DC-area jurisdictional boundaries.
The story said that the procurement officer for the program, David Tarantino, revealed that Motorola is protesting the award to IBM on the grounds that its proposal was not fairly evaluated. The Maryland State Board of Contract Appeals is set to hear Motorola's complaint in September or October.
The Post story said that the communications system would link laptop and hand-held computers together with Web-enabled cell phones.
