Catalyst wins federal grant

Catalyst Communications announced it has landed a research-and-development grant from the Department of Agriculture. The Phase II Small Business Innovative Research grant will let Catalyst and partner Virginia Tech University study techniques to optimize radio-over-IP audio quality and bandwidth optimization for Project 25 applications.
Other areas to be studied include the optimization of the multicast transport for P25 applications and intelligent routing between encrypted and unencrypted audio.
The results of the research will benefit future users of P25 systems that use IP networks for transport, the company said. Catalyst and Virginia Tech completed Phase 1 in June and commercialized the research as an open P25 interface to base stations that is designed to be compliant with the ongoing TIA standard for console interface, the company said.
