Illinois bill mandates miner wireless communications

A bill to protect trapped miners, and rescuers responding to such incidents recently won unanimous approval in the Illinois House and is now heading to the Senate. Illinois Senate Bill 929 proposes requiring mine operators to install wireless devices able to receive and transmit emergency communications from the surface to any location throughout the mine. The bill also orders operators to purchase a real-time tracking system capable of monitoring the physical location of each person underground.
