Together with Siemens, Motorola will supply core network infrastructure, software, implementation services and maintenance for a terrestrial trunked radio, or TETRA, radio communications network for the Norwegian national public-safety network. The network will be based on Motorola's TETRA Over IP switch solution and the Dimetra IP solution that integrates voice, messaging and mobile applications.

Motorola also has been selected by Lithuania's Ministry of Interior to deliver a nationwide TETRA communications network. The network will serve the border guard, customs, emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) and the state secret service.

In other news, Sprint Nextel awarded Motorola the Chicago market for the buildout of its WiMAX wireless broadband service. Motorola will deploy a WiMAX infrastructure to at least 1000 sites in the greater Chicagoland area, with select area coverage for Sprint Nextel's existing EV-DO network, according to the company. Initial service is expected to begin in late 2007, with the commercial launch set for the first half of 2008. Motorola also is participating in WiMAX equipment and software trials at Sprint Nextel's Herndon, Va.-based 4G laboratory.
