1987

FCC dedicates 6 MHz of 800 MHz spectrum for public safety.

1989

Project 25 conducts its first meeting.

1970

FCC allows unused TV Channels 14-20 to be used for land mobile communications in certain markets.

1996

Congress passes law dedicating 24 MHz of 700 MHz spectrum to public safety.

2001

Terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 refocus the nation on public-safety issues, including communications.

2004

FCC approves narrowbanding rules requiring systems between 150 and 512 MHz to operate on 12.5 KHz channels.
FCC approves rules for the reconfiguration of the 800 MHz band.

2007

FCC approves rules for 700 MHz spectrum, creating narrowband and broadband portions for public safety.
