Sprint Nextel to launch Mobile WiMAX service this year

Spring Nextel recently released a progress report on its plans for large-scale, advanced mobile broadband network deployments. The company intends to launch Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.116e-2005) broadband services in initial markets, specifically Chicago and Washington, D.C., by the end of 2007, with a larger rollout servicing 100 million people by the end of 2008, according to the company. In addition, Nokia was named a key infrastructure partner, while Intel committed to the delivery of a single-chip, multi-band WiMAX/Wi-Fi chipset in 2007.
