IBM claims chipset boosts transmission speeds tenfold

IBM recently announced the development of a small, low-cost Wi-Fi chipset based on its silicon germanium technology that the company said would allow wireless devices to receive and transmit signals up to 10 times faster than current Wi-Fi networks. The 60 GHz chipset incorporates a receiver, transmitter and two antennas; because the antennas are embedded in the chipset, fewer components are needed, which reduces system cost, IBM said. Targeted applications for the chipset include wireless personal area networks.
