Nextel and Verizon Wireless announced that they have “amicably” settled two lawsuits that were filed last year.

Verizon Wireless sued Nextel in June 2003 over allegations that Nextel gained unauthorized possession of two prototype Verizon push-to-talk handsets and confidential performance-related information that Nextel leaked to at least one telecommunications industry analyst in the hope of discrediting Verizon’s effort. Verizon Wireless launched its push-to-talk service in August.

Nextel sued Verizon Wireless in September 2003, over marketing claims made by the later that its push-to-talk service is available on the “best, most reliable network.” Nextel said at the time that the “unsubstantiated” claim violated federal and state of New York advertising laws.

Terms of the settlement were not released, but both suits will be dismissed as a result of the agreement.
