M/A-COM said it has been awarded a $1.3 million contract by the County of Albemarle (Va.), City of Charlottesville (Va.) and the University of Virginia (UVA) to deploy an interoperable mobile data communications system that will be used by the Emergency Communication Center (ECC), which coordinates all police, fire and EMS requests for the three entities.

The system consists of equipment from M/A-COM and its partner organizations, Cisco Systems, FATPOT Technologies, and Panasonic. The solution is based on M/A-COM's OpenSky wireless data system in combination with Cisco Aironet access points. M/A-COM's four-site OpenSky system will piggyback on the ECC's current voice system, eliminating the need to install new antenna systems or purchase battery backup and backhaul equipment, M/A-COM said.

In other news, M/A-COM said it also has received an $18.9 million contract from the Rockingham-Harrisonburg (Va.) Emergency Communications Center to deploy a system that will provide interoperable communications between public-safety agencies in the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County that are served by the center. M/A-COM's 800 MHz EDACS IP Project 25-compliant digital communications network will provide the backbone for the new system, which replaces conventional low-band and UHF systems, the company said.
