Alvarion this week announced that Verizon Avenue, a subsidiary of Verizon Communications that focuses on the rural and multidwelling-unit markets, has purchased about 2300 BreezeACCESS VL fixed wireless broadband units to provide high-speed access to five military communities in Monterey, Calif.

The network is part of a U.S. Department of Defense effort to modernize military housing across the United States. Using advanced OFDM algorithms—the advanced non-line-of-sight technology that is the basis of WiMAX—Alvarion’s solution is capable of covering all users in an area, regardless of terrain and foliage, according to a company press release.

In addition, Verizon Avenue has deployed Alvarion’s BreezeNET B point-to-point systems that used unlicensed bands at 5.3 GHz and 5.8 GHz to backhaul the VL cell sites to Verizon Avenue’s nearest point of presence.

"Alvarion is proud to work with Verizon and Clark Pinnacle to bring modern necessities like high-speed Internet access to America's military families," Alvarion President Amir Rosenzweig said in a prepared statement. "With our advanced, cost effective broadband access systems and hands-on support services, fixed wireless proved to be the best solution to deliver high-speed Internet service in these communities and is the basis for our growing relationship with Verizon Avenue."
