California city installs mesh network with eye towards first responders

The city of Lancaster, Calif., announced it would install a wireless mesh network developed by Los Angeles-based XRF Technologies. Terms of the deal were not announced. The network is capable of providing converged services including voice, high-speed data and high-definition television. The network initially will be used to provide high-speed Internet access to the city’s 125,000 residents, but future plans include the addition of voice-over-IP services, and use by the city’s police, fire and emergency services personnel, the company said.
