Independence, Mo., will receive $5.4 million in federal monies to install an interoperable voice and data communications system that will allow the city’s public-safety organizations to communicate with one another, something they currently can’t do because they use different frequencies, the Kansas City Star reported. However, deployment isn’t a sure thing, even with the federal dollars. The city must raise $1.8 million in matching funds at a time when the general fund doesn’t have enough money to finance salary increases for city employees, the paper said.
