In an effort to consolidate disparate initiatives, the Public-Safety Wireless Network (PSWN) program has been moved under the SAFECOM umbrella and will no longer function as a separate entity, SAFECOM announced.

“Over the last decade, several programs in the Federal Government have addressed public safety communications and interoperability—the PSWN program being one of those programs,” said Dr. David Boyd, SAFECOM director, in a statement. “SAFECOM represents a unified endeavor to coordinate the efforts of local, tribal, state, and federal public safety agencies working to improve interoperable wireless communications.”

Established in 2002, SAFECOM oversees all initiatives and projects pertaining to public-safety communications and interoperability and is managed within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
