New Zealand-based RoamAD, a supplier of mesh solutions for scalable metro Wi-Fi networks, yesterday announced it has successfully conducted a multi-party VoIP conference call over its network with all participants traveling at speeds in excess of 80 mph.

The test was conducted on the Canamex Interstate Highway (I-19), from Rio Rico to a point south of Green Valley, Ariz., according to the company’s press release. Deployed by WI-VOD Corp., the Arizona Telecommunications and Information Council manages the network, which was funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"We needed to increase our ability to communicate in the field. Having mobile voice and high-speed Internet access in our mobile units on the highways delivers what we are looking for,” Rio Rico Fire Chief Mike Foster said in a prepared statement. “The speed at which the mobile VoIP worked was very impressive. It will greatly increase our in-field communications and effectiveness.”

Initially, the network will serve first-responder organizations, and various other community agencies, schools, businesses and resident could be added as the deployment expands. The network will cover 32 continuous miles of highway and is scheduled for completion by May.
