ShotSpotter announced yesterday that its Gunshot Location System (GLS) would be integrated with Tropos Networks’ Metro-Scale Wi-Fi Mesh solutions so municipalities can deploy a Wi-Fi mesh network that can simultaneously support the transmission of gunfire data to public-safety officials.

Gregg Rowland, senior vice president of sales and marketing, said partnering with Tropos provides a unique opportunity to provide public-safety officials with a one-stop-shop solution to track and capture gunfire data that is transmitted in real-time over a muni-Wi-Fi network.

“Governments are putting up wireless surveillance systems, traffic-intersection automated ticketing systems and ShotSpotter systems,” Rowland said. “And they are using a single backhaul network to wirelessly enable all of those technologies.”

Tropos’ mesh technology provides better coverage than competitors, and the company successfully has deployed in cities that are interested in purchasing a GLS system, Rowland said. Normally, the company must install a dedicated wireless network before installing the GLS, but launching the technology on an existing network reduces the overall deployment costs for the municipality.

“If muni-Wi-Fi is already going up, the customer can bundle the two and save a lot of money,” he said.
