Atheros Communications announced this week that it had developed what it is calling the world’s first complete single-chip wireless LAN solution built to the IEEE 802.11g standard. The Atheros AR5005G combines a media access controller, baseband processor and “high-performance” 2.4 GHz radio in a “low-cost” CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) design, the company said. The chipset supports the latest WLAN security standards, including Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) and the 802.11i enhanced security using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), the company said.
