Report: Rumors of Wi-Fi’s demise are greatly exaggerated

Oyster Bay, N.Y.-based ABI Research said today its research has refuted the notion that developing WiMAX technologies will one day “kill” Wi-Fi. The company said the first WiMax chipsets won’t be available to laptop computer manufacturers until mid-2006 at the earliest, meaning it will be several years before WiMAX “gets any real traction in the 802.16e market,” the firm said.
The firm predicted that WiMAX and Wi-Fi more likely would coexist; one suggested scenario involved using WiMAX to provide backhaul to Wi-Fi access points.
