WiMAX to be deployed at Katrina relief site
Sep 9, 2005 3:14 PM
Intel yesterday shipped WiMAX equipment to San Antonio’s decommissioned Kelly Air Force base, where evacuees from the Hurricane Katrina-affected region are being housed, according to numerous media reports.
With the WiMAX equipment, the base can be linked to the Internet with a high-speed connection. Wi-Fi hotspots are being deployed throughout the former Air Force base, but they require a backhaul link to the Internet to be useful. The WiMAX equipment will provide a 15-mile link to an Internet point of presence.
The FCC yesterday approved an emergency license for the WiMAX link.
