Digital Angel lands $3.2 million for pilot program

Digital Angel landed a $3.2 million contract from the South Carolina Army National Guard for a pilot program involving its OuterLink satellite communications network. The program will test the network’s ability to provide interoperability between the National Guard’s and Department of Homeland Security’s terrestrial communications networks, as well as with an Aircraft Vibration Monitoring System, which provides in-flight reporting of aircraft vibration and other mechanical data.

French retailer deploys enterprise mobility system

Symbol Technologies’ PDT6100 and PDT6800 enterprise mobility solutions recently were deployed by French clothing retailer Kiabi Europe. The solution consists of mobile computers that run on the vendor’s wireless network infrastructure, which provides AP4131 access points for real-time tracking of Kiabi’s operations, according to Symbol.

Shanghai establishes TETRA system

Motorola has been awarded a contract by Shanghai Telecom to establish an 800 MHz, IP-based TETRA digital trunking government radio network for the city of Shanghai. The network will be designed to enable 50,000 users from different government agencies to communicate on a single, unified platform.

Southern county installs Wi-Fi

Dickenson County, Va., chose Proxim Wireless to deploy a municipal Wi-Fi network for public-safety, residential and business users throughout the county. The network will be managed, installed and operated by the Dickenson County Wireless Integrated Network, a county-funded authority.

Italian city gets muni Wi-Fi network

Bologna, Italy, has launched a RoamAD-based municipal Wi-Fi network that now provides free Internet access to residents as well as students and faculty at the University of Bologna. The network is remotely upgradeable and supports mobile broadband data, VoIP and voice over Wi-Fi, according to the company.
