Lumera Corp. announced the introduction of a line of indoor/outdoor directional mini-panel antennas for use with 802.11a and 802.11b/g wireless networks. The antennas combine high gain with a directional beam and virtually no backscatter, the company said. The small form factor allows them to be integrated into a laptop computer or other consumer electronic devices. The “highly directional” antennas enable enterprises that employ wireless LANs to improve network security by containing the RF signal within a well-defined perimeter, which prevents access to the signal from outside the premises, the company said. When used as a base station antenna, the panels can increase base-station range by three to four times, without increasing power, Lumera said.
