Leading companies from the mobile industry recently announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to apply for a mobile Top Level Domain (TLD) from the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) during the current application round, which closed March 15. Should ICANN grant the mobile TLD, the participating companies—Microsoft, Nokia, Vodafone, 3, GSM Association, HP, Orange, Samsung Electronics, and Sun Microsystems—would form a joint venture to manage the domain, which would “create the opportunity to streamline the deployment of new Internet sites optimized for mobile usage,” according to a press release announcing the MOU. The companies intend to form a registry company to manage the distribution of the new mobile TLD names.
