The Chicago Fire Department will reprogram more than 1000 department-issued radios to make them less vulnerable to attacks by “casual hackers,” the Chicago Sun-Times has reported. Over the past month, six racial slurs were broadcast over the CFD’s radio network. Last week a CFD spokeswoman suggested that the most recent slur might have been the work of a hacker who broke into the emergency communications system. The reprogramming would alter the radio signal in such way that should a transmission be completed, there would be a “much better chance” that it would have been generated from within the department, the paper said.
