IEEE to develop new protocol

Jul 1, 2006 12:00 PM

IEEE has begun work on the “IEEE Standard for Long Wavelength Wireless Network Protocol,” a new P1902.1 standard for the RuBee visibility network protocol — a bi-directional, radiating, transceiver protocol that operates below the 450 KHz wavelengths to work in harsh environments with networks housing multiple radio tags. The network and tags are different from RFID technology because they are unaffected by liquids, can operate underwater and underground, and can be used in implantable medical sensors, according to the IEEE.

In other news, IEEE has postponed its review of 802.20 wireless technology feasibility, according to the Wall Street Journal. The new technology is a competitor to the popular WiMAX solution used to deliver long-range broadband access.
