FCC Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy today left the commission after this morning’s regular meeting, leaving fellow Republican Kevin Martin in the unusual position of being in the minority while serving as chairman of the panel.

Combined with former Chairman Michael Powell’s resignation in March, Abernathy’s departure means Martin is the lone Republican on the FCC. The other two FCC commissioners, Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein, are both Democrats.

“You are outnumbered a little bit now, Kevin, but hopefully that will change soon,” Abernathy said.

Indeed, the Senate could consider the nomination of Tennessee Republican Deborah Tate and the renomination of Copps as early as next week.

Abernathy’s term on the commission ended last year, but federal rules allowed her to continue serving until Congress adjourns this year. Last month, Abernathy announced she would leave the FCC today.
