IEEE selects single proposal for mesh networking specification
Mar 16, 2006 3:28 PM
The IEEE 802.11 working group announced this week that it confirmed a single proposal that will serve as the basis for its 802.11s standard, which will provide an interoperable and secure wireless distribution system between 802.11 mesh network access points.
The goal is to reduce backhaul installation costs and extend mobility to wireless LANs, “enabling a new class of 802.11 applications that require untethered infrastructure,” the working group said in a statement. It started with 15 proposals, which were narrowed to two finalists and then combined into a joint proposal.
