Twenty-three U.S. House members recently wrote to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell, urging the commission to “act as quickly as possible” to resolve the interference problems that plague the 800 MHz band and which have wreaked havoc on public-safety communications.

However, the representatives also expressed significant opposition to the awarding of spectrum in the 1.9 GHz band to Nextel Communications as part of the deal. The lawmakers said the Communications Act prohibits such a grant and that auctioning the spectrum would generate “billions of dollars” for the U.S. Treasury.
