The 800 MHz Transition Administrator—an FCC-approved team comprised of systems integrator Bearing Point, the law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, and radio spectrum consultancy Baseline Telecom—has invited comment from interested parties on various associated with the rebanding of the airwaves to alleviate interference that plagues public-safety communications nationwide.

Interested parties should submit comments by e-mail to Comments@800TA.org or in writing to 800 MHz Transition Administrator, c/o Robert B. Kelly, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P., 1201 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20044-0407. Comments are due by Jan. 12, 2005.

In other FCC-related news, the commission issued rules that would permit the use of new unlicensed wideband devices in the 6 GHz, 17 GHz and 24 GHz bands. Such devices would include vehicular radar systems and location tracking devices. In addition, the FCC approved the use of satellite-based earth station on vessel (ESV) systems on vessels. ESV systems provide communications services, including Internet access, on board cruise ships, merchant ships, ferries, barges, and other vessels. In order to protect fixed terrestrial services, the FCC said ESV use would be subject to operation and spectrum limitations as well as coordination requirements. Fixed satellite operators would be protected by power limits placed on ESV operations, the FCC said.
