If FirstNet is not the answer, does someone have a better alternative?
Now, there are plenty of questions that still need to be answered regarding FirstNet’s pricing, coverage and deployment schedule, as well as the appropriate role of private sector and the federal government in public-safety communications, which historically has been handled by state and local governments.
But FirstNet should be given the opportunity to make its vision a reality for first responders, no matter who wins in November. Public safety should be a bipartisan issue.
In fact, if FirstNet is able to deliver the nationwide public-safety network as outlined in the RFP, the biggest question from Congress should be, “Can we replicate this model in other areas of government that need to be addressed?”
