SceneDoc releases 3.0 upgrade focused on efficient sharing, team-based investigations
As with previous versions of SceneDoc, the 3.0 version of the application will support the gathering of evidence with or without connectivity to the cloud or other centralized network capability, Kottoor said. Those connected to the source collecting data can benefit from the new sharing functionality, he said.
Connections via SceneDoc are secure, with the 3.0 release meeting the standards set by the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) division of the FBI, according to Kottoor. SceneDoc 3.0 also include multi-factor authentication to sign in.
“At this point, SceneDoc is not querying federal databases like NCIC or anything like that,” he said. “But, as a co-founder of the company, I just felt that, if we’re going to participate with a focus on public safety—and law enforcement in particular—we ought to be [CJIS compliant].”
SceneDoc 3.0 also includes enhanced capabilities for handling multimedia like audio and video to ensure chain of custody and to improve processing in a manner that makes indexing/analytic functions easier, Kottor said.
“Video and audio have always been something you could feed into SceneDoc,” Kottoor said. “We’ve taken the slow method of making sure that we’re doing it in a very secure way, in terms of capturing using the mobile device. Taking audio and taking video using your iPhone or [other device]—while that might seem trivial and a pretty easy thing to turn on—what we were spending a lot of time on was the back end to that tool.
“How do you hash that properly? How do we provide a tool for the customer, so they can take an audio file or a video file and pass it through our system to verify whether something has been altered or not, giving folks the confidence that they can go ahead and use this sort of stuff.”
Announced on Friday, SceneDoc 3.0 is available immediately, with existing SceneDoc customers able to download the software upgrade at no additional cost, Kottoor said.
