The New System
The NJ Transit system includes radio base stations, core infrastructure and more than 4,000 TETRA subscriber radios to support on-board Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment for buses, NJ Transit contract bus operations, light rail trains and non-revenue fleet vehicles, according to Keith Ammons, vice president of market development for PowerTrunk Inc. PowerTrunk is the manufacturer of the TETRA network infrastructure and TETRA subscriber radio equipment installed by NJ Transit.
Ammons said the TETRA system is also being used for voice and data communications between light rail trains and the control center. In addition, the system provides data communications support for an advanced automatic vehicle location (AVL) application supplied by a third party.
The “roll-out is not yet 100% complete,” said Ammons, “and statewide coverage for all NJT service areas is to be provided.”
When complete, there will be 36 sites across the state.
