In the United States, Brown said that Motorola Solutions plans to participate in the FirstNet request for proposal (RFP) process that is designed to result in a contractor being selected late this year to deploy and operate a nationwide public-safety broadband network.
“We’ve had interest from a few different partners,” Brown said. “We do plan on participating—as you probably would expect—in that response.”
Even if Motorola Solutions is part of the winning contractor team for the FirstNet initiative, the company does not expect to begin generating revenue from such a deal until at least 2018, Brown said. Meanwhile, company officials continue to be encouraged by the strength of its land-mobile-radio business in North America, he said.
“We view LTE and public-safety LTE, in regards to FirstNet—as we’ve said a number of times before—as additive to our LMR business,” Brown said. “We continue to grow in North America. We continue to add multiyear service contracts in North America. We continue to build backlog in North America with LMR.
“Given our incumbency, our public-safety expertise and our ability, I think [we’re in] an ideal position to provide interoperability between LMR and—over time—public-safety LTE in North America. I think we’re very, very well positioned. We don’t think of revenue contribution in 2016 or 2017 [from public-safety LTE in North America].”
