Eurobites: Belgium’s Citymesh taps Nokia for drone-based emergency network

Belgian operator Citymesh is to use Nokia’s drone networks platform for a 5G-based emergency services system in what the Finnish vendor describes as a first-of-its-kind contract. Nokia will supply 70 of its “drone-in-a-box” units that will be deployed in 35 designated emergency zones across Belgium, gathering information in the critical 15-minute period immediately following an emergency call that first-responders can use to bring themselves fully up to speed with the situation. According to Nokia, Belgium’s emergency services can receive more than 2 million calls a year, and police and firefighters are often dispatched with incomplete data that can negatively affect the efficiency of their response.
