Marines choose Harris multiband radio (with related video)
April 11, 2012
The U.S. Marine Corps is expected to buy $49 million worth of Harris land-mobile-radio (LMR) equipment — most notably, multiband Unity radios — during the next five years through an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract.
Under the contract, the Marine Corps will be able to buy Unity XG-100P portable radios and Unity XG-100M mobile radios for its enterprise land-mobile-radio program. These full-spectrum radios cover all LMR bands used by the Marine Corp and public safety, according to Harris.
“We’re just honored to be part of the Marine Corps’ mission. It’s a proud organization, and we’re looking forward to helping them,” Martin Long, director of federal government sales for Harris, said. “We’re excited, and we’re eager to please the U.S. Marine Corps. It’s a very important customer to us.”
Long said the $49 million deal is the largest contract the company has had with the Marine Corps for Unity mobile and portable radios, noting that the deal also includes control stations, accessories and related services. Harris was selected after completing an extensive technical evaluation, he said.
“The technical evaluation was the most important criteria for them,” Long said. “It had very rigorous requirements and very high standards of performance. I know we met those, or we wouldn’t have the award.”
This sentiment was echoed by Steve Marschilok, president of Harris public safety and professional communications.
“Harris' Unity products delivered the reliability, advanced features and assured interoperability demanded by the Marines,” Marschilok said in a prepared statement.
