Kenwood fills communications post

Steven P. Henke has been appointed vice president and general manager of Kenwood USA Corp.’s communications division.
Steven has more than 30 years of experience in the two-way radio industry including 20 years as vice president and chief engineer at Ritron Inc. and most recently with Xelatec, his own communications engineering company.
He will relocate from the Indianapolis area and take control of Kenwood’s operations in Suwanee, Georgia, overseeing the sales and marketing of Land Mobile Systems, BRS and Amateur Radio products. He also will be included in Kenwood’s growing research and development department.
MSV appoints engineering VP
Mobile Satellite Ventures announced the appointment of Dr. Santanu Dutta as vice president of systems engineering, effective immediately.
Dutta, who joins MSV from Ericsson Mobile Platforms, will be responsible for the system architecture for MSV’s next-generation system. He reports to MSV vice president and chief technical officer Peter Karabinis.
Dutta previously served as development manager in Ericsson’s systems analysis and research division, where he led a systems engineering and business development team responsible for competitive analysis of the mobile phone operator’s expansion into cellular 2.5 and 3G markets, including predicting technical requirements for the mobile phone platforms over the next five years.
He also led Ericsson’s m-commerce activities and managed a satellite research group responsible for standardizing the GMR-2 air interface standard at ETSI and TIA.
Prior to Ericsson, Dutta spent 12 years at Rockwell International’s Collins Avionics and Communications Systems division, where he held program management and technical positions. Most recently, he oversaw all of Rockwell’s HF military and commercial avionics radio product lines.
Dutta has a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in the United Kingdom and a master’s degree in communication engineering from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.
Ex state CIO joins ICG Government
John Thomas Flynn, the former chief information office of the State of California and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has joined ICG Government, a Virginia-based government technology consulting firm started by former Virginia Secretary of Technology Don Upson and Paul Brubaker, former deputy CIO in the Department of Defense.
Flynn has been engaged in public sector management and investment in information technology for the last decade. As the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ first CIO, he became the first governor-appointed state CIO in the United States.
Following Massachusetts, he was appointed CIO of California by then Governor Pete Wilson. He served six years as an officer in NASIRE, the association which represents state CIOs, now known as NASCIO, and was elected president of the organization in 1997.
He is a member of the GAO’s Information Technology Board, a position he has held since 1994.
The last three years have seen him actively consulting for college and university presidents on a CIO governance model for higher education. He also was a White House appointee in both the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.
In addition to his public service, he has nearly two decades of private sector experience in systems integration and public sector marketing fields.
Schema expands management team
Schema announced the appointment of two additional members to its senior management team: Daphna Bahat as associate vice president of marketing and Tom Hammond as vice president of sales for the Americas.
These appointments follow the recent announcement of Andrew Silberstein’s promotion to chief operations officer, while continuing in his role as president of Schema Inc.
Daphna Bahat was vice president of marketing for Speedwise. Prior to that, Bahat’s positions included associate vice president, marketing for the broadband access business unit of ECI Telecom Ltd., and managing a research and development software division.
Bahat holds an MBA from Ben-Gurion University and a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Criminology from Bar-Ilan University, Israel.
Tom Hammond served as vice president of sales and marketing with Paratek Microwave Inc. Other past positions include executive sales director with MetaWave Communications and Director of Sales at Motorola.
Hammond holds a BSEE in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from Bradley University.
Patriot taps Canadian VP
Jeff Mathie, president of Patriot Antenna Systems, has announced the appointment of Jaime Bartlett as vice president of Canadian operations.
Based in British Columbia, Canada, Jaime brings to this new position more than 24 years of satellite and retail electronics experience, specializing in marketing and service excellence.
Jaime was formerly the International director of sales for Norsat International Inc. He was responsible for various strategic management positions within the different divisions of Norsat.
Previous to Norsat, Jaime was national sales manager for Aurora Distributing, the Canadian distribution arm of Norsat. He was responsible for the sales and marketing of the Norsat LNBs and transmitters.
Hodges hooks up with Intersil Corp.
Brian Hodges, a 12-year veteran of the semiconductor industry and former executive at Intersil Corp., has joined Anadigm Inc. as vice president of worldwide marketing.
Anadigm provides field programmable analog array integrated circuits and associated design software that greatly reduce the time, effort, and expense required to create real-world interfaces in industrial, communications, automotive, audio capture, and environmental control systems.
ARINC names marketing chief
ARINC Inc. announced the appointment of Richard A. Hoad to the position of Senior Director, Sales and Marketing, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Hoad will be based at the company’s offices in Crawley, U.K., and will supervise ARINC’s international sales staff throughout the region.
Hoad joined ARINC in the United States in 1998 as an account director active in the company’s marketing efforts to U.S. and European airlines. His previous experience included airline flight operations and additional head office positions with Lufthansa and Saudi Arabian Airlines. At ARINC he recently headed the company’s successful GLOBALink/Satellite data link operations, a service that has experienced high levels of growth while maintaining a strong focus on costs.
On2 names new sales executive
On2 Technologies Inc. announced at its annual meeting of stockholders that it has appointed Ashley Crane Allen as Senior Vice President of Sales, replacing Matthew Byrne, and Chris Schapdick as Vice President of Business Affairs.
Allen was most recently General Manager of FutureSource.com and increased sales at that division of FutureSource LLC by three-fold over the last year. At FutureSource, he worked under Mr. Byrne and Douglas A. McIntyre, On2’s chief executive officer. In his new capacity, he will oversee On2’s global sales effort and will report to McIntyre.
Schapdick was On2’s head of customer service and support during 2001 and 2002, a capacity in which he reported to Byrne. In his new position, he will report to Timothy Reusing, On2’s Executive Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs.
He also will handle account management for On2’s major accounts like AOL and resellers like MCS and Nine Lanes.
Startup names chairman
PolarSat Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Lionel Hurtubise to the position of chairman of the board of directors of PolarSat Inc.
Hurtubise, Chairman of Ericsson Canada Inc., holds a number of positions in national and regional institutions dedicated to high technology.
He is past chairman of the board of several organizations, among them, the Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education (CANARIE), the Societe Innovatech Grand Montreal, the Computer Research Institute of Montreal (CRIM) and the Canadian Advanced Technology Association (CATA), Canada’s largest high-technology industry association.
PolarSat Inc. is a new, privately held company primarily focused on the manufacture of satellite communications terminal equipment and systems.
PolarSat’s head office and manufacturing plant is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Ener1 names new CEO
Ener1 Inc. has named Ronald N. Stewart its new chief executive officer as part of corporate re-structuring that positions the company for future growth.
Additionally, Mead McCabe has been named chief financial officer for Ener1 and Larry Light, former chief executive officer of Ener1, Inc., was named chief executive officer and member of the board of directors of the company’s 51 percent-owned EnerLook Solutions subsidiary. Ener1 has also reorganized its former Digital Media Technologies Division into EnerLook Solutions.
Stewart has been a member of Ener1’s board of directors since October 2002. Prior to assuming his new position, Stewart was general counsel for Ener1 Group and Ener1 Inc. He joined the company in April 2002 and has been active in the company’s day-to-day operations and was instrumental in structuring the recent acquisition of the Ener1 Battery Division. Stewart was in the private practice of law and also spent 10 years with ICF Kaiser International, Inc. At ICF Kaiser, he handled complex business issues involving government and commercial contracts, including negotiation of multi-billion-dollar contracts with major government agencies. Stewart also negotiated numerous acquisitions and joint ventures for ICF Kaiser and sat on the Corporate Acquisitions Committee for ICF Kaiser’s Consulting Division and its Energy Consulting Group. Previously, Stewart was a financial and securities analyst for a major commercial bank.
Prior to joining Ener1, McCabe was a management consultant in finance and capital formation, acting as interim CFO and chief operating officer for his corporate clients. Previously, he held executive positions with Genetic Vectors, Inc. for seven years, serving as its vice president of development and finance and then its chief financial officer. McCabe formerly held an investment management position with Merrill Lynch.
McCabe’s experience spans all areas of finance, accounting and operations, including international operations. He has substantial experience working with emerging technology companies, organizing their capital formation, operating systems and all other major areas of their business operations.
McCabe has an MBA in finance and international business. He will remain as chief financial officer of Ener1 Group. McCabe replaces Michael Brewer, who has retired.
Light, the new chief executive officer of EnerLook, has been instrumental in the management and development of these digital media products. He will play an important role in developing and marketing new EnerLook product solutions.
Ener1’s reorganization of the EnerLook subsidiary includes assets of the former Digital Media Technologies Division, consisting of personnel, fixed assets, licenses and other intellectual property. EnerLook also assumed certain Ener1 trade accounts payable and other obligations as part of the reorganization. EnerLook’s new assets include a number of important hardware and software digital media technologies for in-room, interactive digital communications systems using TV-based interfaces, originally developed by Ener1, together with the engineering resources responsible for the development of those technologies. These additions are expected to dramatically increase EnerLook’s ability to develop new products and services for its markets and significantly increase its technical support capabilities.
Broadband Services taps veteran
Broadband Services, Inc. announced that veteran cable executive Antonio Dominguez has joined the company as Vice President, National Accounts.
Dominguez, who most recently had served as vice president, sales and marketing, broadband access markets with Neptec Optical Solutions, Inc., will be responsible for developing and implementing sales strategies for the Western United States for BSI’s asset management suite of products and services.
A 17-year veteran of the Time-Warner Communications organization, Dominguez began his career with the company’s ATC predecessor in 1982 and initially worked in direct sales and local programming and as a construction manager and an assistant general manager. In 1985, he was named general manager.
Dominguez later became vice president, operations for Time Warner’s South Bay system in Los Angeles, and served as a member of the strategic management team for the 205,000-customer Southern Region of the Los Angeles Division.
In 1999, Dominguez joined Excite @ Home, first as senior director of affiliate operations, Regional Deployment Engineering and later as senior director of operations with the @Home Solutions Division. In both cases, Dominguez was responsible for the development of the @Home network infrastructure required to grow broadband cable modem service throughout North America. Among his accomplishments with the high-speed data provider were the initiation and implementation of a strategic resource allocation program that decreased engineering turn-around time by 50 percent.
Dominguez earned his B.A. with departmental honors in Communications from Chapman University in Orange, CA, and earned his MBA in Finance from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He resides in Danville, CA. Dominguez is a member of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE).
