New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has called for the consolidation of eight dispatch centers to two “identical” centers that would share the same computer system, according to the New York Times. Not only are the city’s police, fire and emergency medical communications networks incompatible—preventing the sharing of information—but are decentralized to the point that dispatchers often must “dial 911 themselves to communicate across agency lines,” the paper said.
