The FCC last week announced its intention to auction 90 MHz of advanced wireless spectrum in the 1.7 GHz and 2.1 GHz bands as early as June 2006.
Wireless carriers seeking additional bandwidth to offer advanced services are expected to be the primary bidders in the auction, which some analysts estimate will generate as much as $15 billion in revenue. Some of that revenue will be used to relocate the military from the 1710 MHz to 1755 MHz band.
FCC commissioners approved an order that modified rules for the bands, including stipulations designed to encourage deployments in rural areas and by typically smaller providers known as designated entities.
