Motorola demonstrated the feasibility of alternative power systems for remote GSM base stations at its GSM facility in Swindon, United Kingdom. The company worked with Briston, Bath and Surrery Universities and showed a combination of solar cells and wind turbines can generate 1200 watts in a continual cycle, which is enough to drive a mid-sized base station and support a microwave-backhaul installation.
In other news, the company received the 2006 IEEE Standards Association Corporate Award for its contribution to IEEE standards.
