Napolitano reinforces counterterrorism agreement with Slovak Republic
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano recently met with Slovak Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic to discuss the U.S. and Slovak Republic’s commitment to combat transnational crime and terrorism and enhance data-sharing and protection.
“Faced with ever-evolving transnational threats, it is critical that the United States and Slovak Republic work together to investigate crime and prevent criminals and terrorists from entering our respective countries,” Napolitano said in a statement. “The Obama Administration remains committed to strengthening our efforts with the Slovak Republic to ensure our mutual security and combat transnational crime, while facilitating lawful trade and travel between our two nations.”
The Slovak Republic was designated as a member of the Visa Waiver Program in 2008, which according to Napolitano strengthened information-sharing and ensured strict security standards. In the meeting, the secretary underscored the importance of building on the collaboration and reiterated the department’s continued commitment to securing the global supply chain to facilitate legal trade and commerce.
The meeting follows Napolitano’s recent face-to-face discussions with Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews regarding the U.S. and Canada’s commitment to work as partners along the border to address threats at the earliest point; facilitate trade, economic growth, and jobs; collaborate on integrated cross-border law enforcement; and partner to secure and strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure and cybersecurity.
