Thales Communications yesterday announced GPS software is available for its Project 25 portable radio, allowing customers to transmit and receive location data. Downloadable at a cost of $175 per user, the software works in conjunction with any GPS unit that outputs the standard NMEA 0183 GPS data format and can display location information on ESRU ArcMap software, according to Steve Nichols, Thales’ Project 25 marketing manager. “The data is transmitted on a conventional Project 25 voice channel,” Nichols said, noting that the transmission can be encrypted to ensure security.
