MeshDynamics offers first three-radio solution for mesh networks
MeshDynamics this week announced the availability of its MD-300 family of software and systems products—a mesh networking solution that the company claims will yield bandwidth improvements that are more than 50 times greater than those provided by traditional mesh networks.
Most mesh networks use one radio per node, which introduces latency issues during times of heavy traffic, because the node can’t send and receive data at the same time—an even greater problem, because the radios all share the same spectrum. MeshDynamics’ three-radio structured mesh features a set of algorithms that use two 802.11a radios per backhaul path per node and a separate service radio, which typically is an 802.11b/g radio to eliminate the problem. All three radio sets operate on different spectrum. Although mesh networks typically are limited to delivering data applications today, MeshDynamics officials believe the company’s solution will enable delivery of VoIP on a broad scale.
“When compared with cellular, Structured Mesh solutions offer more than a 100x advantage in cost-per-minute-per-user when supporting dense VoIP,” MeshDynamics CEO Bob Osann said in a prepared statement. “Compared with conventional mesh solutions, our cost-per-Kb-per-user exceeds 10x for an entire deployment, given realistic traffic levels.”
