Mentor Engineering unveiled the Ranger, a rugged mobile computer with an internal wireless modem that supports data and voice communications on GPRS and CDMA networks. Its internal 16-channel GPS receiver, magnetic stripe reader, Smart Card reader, multiple inputs/outputs and MIL STD 810F rating provide a powerful mobile computing platform for a wide range of fleet-management and telematics needs, according to the company.

RUGGED HANDHELD COMPUTER
Panasonic Computer Solutions unveiled the Toughbook CF-U1, a rugged handheld computer with a low-power Intel Atom processor. The computer features RFID readers and GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G mobile-broadband. It measures 7.2 inches wide by 5.9 inches deep by 2.2 inches high. It weighs 2.3 pounds, which includes both batteries. It costs $2499.

REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS SUITE
Altobridge launched its Remote Contiguous Communications Unit for first responders. The suitcase-sized communications suite combines cellular and satellite technology to restore communication between first responders and other key emergency resources, such as police, fire and EMS. According to the company, calls made are converted to an IP stream that is transmitted via satellite and received by the handset through an existing network provider or another public or private network.
