Motorola unveils remote speaker microphone for firefighters
Motorola Solutions this week announced the launch of the APX XE remote speaker microphone (RSM), which the company has designed specifically to meet the needs of fire personnel that operate in environments with high noise levels and extreme temperature.
Shown at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) conference in Philadelphia, the APX XE remote speaker microphone features large controls that are designed to be easily accessible with bulky gloves — from a large-but-protected emergency button to a prominent push-to-talk button and a sizeable volume switch.
Beyond ergonomics, the APX XE remote speaker microphone extends the dual-microphone design and noise-suppression technology that is part of the APX radio line to the user in a reliable manner, according to Nick Candotti, director of Motorola Solutions’ global accessory and energy business.
“Obviously, in the market that we’re going after, quality is the key,” Candotti said. “We’ve designed this with the highest quality in mind, from the ruggedness of the device to the audio quality.”
Other features of the microphone include an emergency strobe light that is visible up to 10 feet away in thick smoke and flexible mounting options. The remote speaker microphone is the latest product in Motorola’s portfolio that is designed to address communications issues that are problems for firefighters, according to Motorola spokesman Steve Gorecki.
“We think the RSM is something the fire market, in particular, has been looking for, in terms of this type of accessory, and a continuation of what we’re doing in terms of innovation, sound and audio quality with the APX and APX XE lines,” Gorecki said.
