The company decided to use GSM —its fourth wireless transport platform—to deliver its location-based services because GSM is the “most dominant technology is use around the world” and would enable allow the company to “take advantage of low device costs and expand our commercial and consumer market opportunities globally,” said Donald Simmonds, AirIQ president and CEO. According to AirIQ, GSM accounts for 71% of the terrestrial wireless world market, with more than 160 million subscribers added in the past twelve months. Worldwide GSM subscribers are expected to pass 1 billion during 2004, according to the GSM Association.
