After initially requiring drug manufacturers to attach radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to products by the end of March, retail giant Wal-Mart has decided to delay the requirement until the of June, according to a recent New York Times story.
Beset with problems associated with counterfeit products, the pharmaceutical industry is believed to be one manufacturing sector that would benefit most from RFID systems, which are designed to provide greater visibility and accuracy within the supply chain.
The decision is the latest instance of Wal-Mart delaying the implementation of RFID, which has been hindered by the expense of tags and the fact that no standards have been established for the technology.
