FCC announces RFID workshop
The Federal Communications Commission this week announced it would hold a workshop on radio frequency identification (RFID) on October 7 at commission headquarters in Washington, D.C. The FCC’s goal is to learn whether any regulatory barriers exist that would stand in the way of RFID deployments. Presenters will include representatives from RFID system developers and end users, as well as academia.
In other news, the FCC recently announced it has streamlined the review process for communications towers under the National Historic Preservation Act. The goal is to reduce the case backlogs that have resulted because of the “dramatic increase” in tower construction since the late 1990s, the commission said. The FCC said it has defined standards to be used to identify historic properties that might be affected by tower construction and established categories that would be excluded from NHPA review, such as enhancements to existing towers and construction of replacement or temporary towers.
